Brown Bin Tips

Organics recycling is an important part of Hampstead’s long-term waste strategy. Diverting organic waste away from landfills saves the Town money and reduces the need for additional landfill sites.

Keep it clean

- Line the bottom of your brown bin with flyers, newspapers or use a yard waste paper bag to keep it clean.
- Rinse your brown bin with a garden hose from time to time, especially if you don’t line your bin with paper.
- Rinse your brown bin with baking soda or vinegar to reduce odours and keep bugs out.
- Kitchen bins are dish washer safe.
- Line the bottom of your kitchen bin with flyers or newspaper or paper bags.
- Paper cups (unwaxed) can be used to hold cooking grease.

What about the smell?

- Put your brown bin out for collection every week, even if it’s not full.
- Store your bin in a shady place out of the sun.
- Keeping your meat or fish scraps in the freezer until collection day helps reduce odours.
- Empty your kitchen bin daily.

Tips for animals and bugs

- Keep your brown bin away from fences and deck railings so animals can’t get into it.
- If you do place your bin near a fence or deck railing, secure it with a bungee cord so it doesn’t get knocked over.
- Sprinkling a strong smelling biodegradable repellent such as vinegar on your bin will help keep pests away.

Alternatives to buying a bin liner

- Use newspapers or flyers to line the bottom of your containers.

Make a home-made bin liner from old newspapers. Get the kids involved and have fun with it. One session could keep you in paper liners for weeks.

What not to do

- The Town’s organic waste program does not accept plastic, compostable or biodegradable plastic bags or bin liners.
- Clothing and textiles do not belong in the brown bin. If you cannot donate these items, they can be disposed of through your garbage collection.
