Employment Opportunity: Superintendant-Public Works

Full time - Contractual Management Position
3 year contract with possibility of renewal
Remuneration : Depending on the experience

Nature and characteristics of the position

Under the authority of the Director of Public Works Department, the incumbent manages the human resources (including foremen) along with the finan­cial, material and informational resources of his ad­ministrative unit in accordance with the rules, standards, regulations and collective agreements in place. He ensures the required training of the staff.  He counsels the foremen and blue collar workers in the selection of the work methods and resources in the execution of work.  He represents the department when dealing with residents and other Departments of the Town.

The main duties are:

  • Assist the director with the planning of the operations.
  • Plan, coordinate and control plantation, tree trimming and maintenance of the Town's green spaces (including floral arrangements).
  • Supervise maintenance and repair of water works and sewage systems and road works.
  • Coordinate the maintenance work required for the grass cutting in the town's parks and median strips as well as the spreading of abrasives, snow plowing and snow removal.
  • Answer complaints by citizens and other municipal departments within the required deadlines.
  • Make sure health and safety standards and directives are followed.
  • Prepare and issue weekly reports on work performed by unit's employees.
  • When needed, work week-end and night shift and do stand-by duties.

Requirements

  • Specialized DEC (horticulture or civil engineering or equivalent);
  • To have completed a P6B training programme constitutes an asset;
  • 10 completed management courses (CEGEP or university level) constitutes an asset;
  • Certificate in general health & safety on construction sites;
  • 6 to 7 years relevant experience, preferably in the municipal field;
  • Experience in managing a work team within a unionized environment;
  • Tact and diplomacy;
  • Capability to work under pressure;
  • Extensive political savvy;
  • Good knowledge (both oral and written) of the French and English language.
