By-law Concerning AirBnb-type Rental Properties

2017-05-12

Please be advised that Zoning By-law 1001-2 prohibits AirBnb, VRBO, and short-term property rentals in the Town of Hampstead.

It has come to our attention that several properties in the municipality are being used as hotel like rental properties.

As stipulated in the by-law, Hampstead’s zoning is 100 per cent residential, therefore short-term commercial use of property is prohibited, and by virtue of the law it is an illegal activity.

If you are engaging in this type of business, the Town asks you to cease this activity as soon as possible in order to comply with the by-law.

Any  person  who  contravenes or  allows  the  violation  of  a  provision  of  this by-law is  guilty  of  an offence and, for each day that the offence continues, is liable to a maximum fine of: $1,000 for a first offence, and $2,000 for subsequent offences. For a corporation, the fines are $2,000 and $4,000 respectively.
